Digestive Supplements
Your gastrointestinal tract is comprised of tens of trillions of microorganisms, collectively referred to as the “microbiome.” It includes at least 1000 different species of bacteria and more than 3 million genes. About 10 percent of the bacteria are “bad” (causing digestive distress) and 90 percent are “good” (controlling the bad bacteria).
As infants, we’re born sterile without any intestinal bacteria. Through a vaginal birth, skin-to-skin contact with mother’s skin, and breastmilk, we begin this crucial colonization of microorganisms. Problems with the microbiome begin when it’s under significant stress, such as with antibiotic use and other medications, and a poor diet that doesn’t provide proper nutrition for the gut bacteria. When this ratio of “good” to “bad” bacteria becomes unbalanced, dysbiosis occurs. Dysbiosis is directly linked to health problems such as inflammatory bowel disease, allergies, autoimmune disease, functional bowel disorders, obesity and diabetes.
There’s also a definite, key connection between the gut microbiome and brain. In fact, your gut is known as “the second brain” because it contains a network of more than 100 million neurons that run the length of the gastrointestinal tract. The bacteria living in your intestines and stomach produce neuroactive compounds that connect to the brain, affecting behavior, mood, and emotions. It’s crucial to maintain a healthy functioning gut in order to achieve a healthy functioning body.
About 80% of the immune system resides in the gastrointestinal tract, making the environment in the gut profoundly influence immune function.
There are a range of probiotic supplements, digestive supplements, and fiber supplements that support a healthy microbiome environment and healthy digestion. Certain products also support the body’s ability to efficiently digest food, provide support for digestive discomfort, nutrient absorption, and toxin elimination. Some of the more common ones include: probiotics, prebiotics, butyrate, fiber supplements, digestive enzymes, healthy fats, L-glutamine and fermented foods.

Poor food absorption and digestion can lead to low energy levels, less than optimal growth, and less efficient immune function. A range of formulas support a healthy digestive process that supports the body’s ability to efficiently digest food, provide support for digestive discomfort, nutrient absorption, and toxin elimination.
